"Pamilya"

The Filipino sun, depicted on the Philippine flag as the embodiment of liberty, can be manually or automatically rotated enabling the viewer to become the artist and create a new artwork.

Pamilya focuses on the duality of the Asian American identity. Where does being too Asian for America and too American for Asia leave you? As minority communities know, we are accepted until it’s inconvenient. “Pamilya” in Tagalog, one of many languages in the Philippines, means family. This artwork pays homage to the strength of family as we search for true placement in American society.

The sun’s movement represents our adaptability as a people alongside the strength we bring into each day. The eight sun rays represent the first 8 provinces to revolt against Spanish colonization in the Phillippines. Looking closely, the newspaper articles mention the effects of racism and on mental health during the pandemic, the flowers are Sampaguitas the Philippine national flower and the triangles represent our duality in identity.
